The department includes 12 specialists - two Assoc. Prof., three Res. Assoc., one Res. Assist. (six PhD), two senior experts, three senior agrotechnologists and one senior laboratory assistant.
The research activity in the department is aimed at:
- Development of schemes for distances and planting, pruning and orchard tree shaping, and systems for soil management;
- Optimization of apple, cherry and plum nutritional regimes through appropriate organic and mineral fertilization;
- Clarifying the role of agrotechnics on the development of pests on fruit species;
- Identification of agents causing viral diseases of pome and stone fruit species. Study and characterization of the economically most important viral diseases;
- Study on species composition and population dynamics and control of the main pests on apple, sweet cherry, sour cherry and plum;
- Development and implementation of technologies for conventional, integrated and organic production of apples, cherries and plums;
- Agrarian economics (the economic efficiency of different technologies for establishment and cultivation of apple, sweet cherry and plum orchards and analysis of the expense reduction possibilities in fruit production);
- Establishing appropriate technologies for the production of cabbage crops (broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage), tomatoes, non-traditional crops (mangold, salad beet), inter-row crops (peas, chickpeas, beans).
- Impact of the CAP greening on biodiversity and environment on farms and rural areas. Economic efficiency of implementing environmental-friendly practices in fruit growing and rural areas. Innovative marketing solutions on farms. Rural development and diversification on rural areas.
